Ocean Visuals Research: What makes impactful ocean-climate imagery?

Date: 25th August 2022
In May 2022 Comms Inc commissioned IPSOS Mori to conduct 12 focus groups across Egypt, Chile and Portugal on ocean-climate imagery.

The objective of the research was to:

• Provide insights into public awareness and understanding of the link between oceans and climate change, and attitudes and behaviours towards the issue

• Understand responses to specific visuals around ocean health and climate change

• Provide guidance on the effective use of images

The Ocean Visuals focus groups form part of the evidence base for the Ocean Visuals open call for photography. The project, which is a collaboration between Comms Inc and Climate Visuals, will create a new evidence-based collection of impactful and truly diverse ocean and coastal climate imagery – all equitably accessible to the media, non-profit sector and education sector.

The findings of the report demonstrate that there is still much work to be done in raising awareness and understanding of the ocean-climate link. Across Egypt, Chile and Portugal, the groups did not make links between ocean health and climate change; this was the case during both general discussions around climate change and the ocean, and when groups were shown the images.
