The period up to the end of 2020 represents an important time for ocean protection. By the end of 2020 we will have new Convention for Biological Diversity marine targets for beyond 2020, law for the High Seas, and new targets for Sustainable Development Goal 14 beyond 2020.
OneOcean is a collective drive to achieve maximum impact for the ocean during this period.
Informed by the work of scientists and other experts, the initiative provides a unified platform for ocean groups and aligns effort around four central objectives:
- New targets to protect at least 30% of the ocean in implemented, fully or highly protected MPAs by 2030 (CBD CoP25 October 2020);
- A robust treaty for the High Seas (UN Negotiations August 2019 and Spring 2020);
- Emissions reductions to limit global heating to 1.5 degrees Celsius (UNFCC CoP25 December 2019 and 2020); and
- Increasing ocean resilience to climate change by reducing other stressors.
