Effective strategic communication plays a vital role in influencing the attitudes, behaviours and policies we need to protect the ocean. That’s why we’re excited to introduce the Advancing Strategic Ocean Communication project, an initiative designed to gather evidence and co-produce ocean-climate communications guidance. This project, led by Communications INC and in partnership with he Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, is an opportunity for the OneOcean Flotilla to support a global effort to strengthen how we communicate about the ocean and its critical role in addressing global challenges.
Why This Project Matters
Strategic communication can help shape policies, mobilise action, and inspire communities to protect the ocean. However, access to evidence-based guidance, tools, and investment in ocean communication has remained limited. This project aims to:
- Advance the practice of strategic communications for ocean advocacy.
- Make resources and tools more accessible to a broader network.
- Galvanise greater investment in ocean communication efforts.
By taking a collaborative approach to co-create guidance, this project hopes to empower the global ocean community with insights and resources to improve how we communicate about the ocean-climate nexus.
How the OneOcean Flotilla Can Get Involved
As a member of the OneOcean Flotilla, you can make the most of this initiative by exploring and applying the project’s resources and tools to strengthen your ocean communications efforts.
- Leverage Strategic Communication Tools
Maximise the impact of your communication efforts with the ‘Better Practice Principles,’ a first of its kind guidance co-created by ocean communicators across the globe. The ‘Better Practice Principles’ and associated resources are designed to enhance communication approaches , strengthen advocacy, and drive meaningful ocean action. These resources are available on the project page on the Communications INC website as they become available. - Watch Key Discussions and Events
If you missed the Communications Symposium Satellite Event at the UN Ocean Decade Conference in Barcelona, you can catch up on key discussions and insights by accessing available recordings and materials of the project kick-off event on the project page. Future communications training and expertise-sharing sessions developed as part of the project will also be available from the Communications INC YouTube channel and promoted on LinkedIn. Keep an eye out if you’re interested in accessing these sessions. - Apply Insights and Support Collective Action
We encourage Flotilla members to actively apply the insights and guidance from the project in their communication efforts. We welcome any feedback on successes or challenges you have faced applying the guidance to your work.
The Power of a Collaborative Network
Through this initiative, the project partners aim to build a diverse and global community of practice of ocean communicators, strengthening collaboration and innovation in the field. This effort directly supports the Flotilla’s role in aligning communication approaches and providing strategic communication tools to drive meaningful ocean protection outcomes.
